OpenSSL 4.1.0 is out: new DTLS features, with known issues to test

The October 23 feature release adds DTLS 1.3. Read its known issues before planning a production migration.

What changed

OpenSSL 4.1.0, released October 23, adds DTLS 1.3 and other functionality. This is a feature-release notice. The separate September 29 security updates remain separate entries on the vendor timeline; this release date is not evidence of a new emergency CVE.

Who should check

The release notes list known DTLS issues involving retransmission, listener error reporting and some handshake acknowledgements. If your application uses DTLS, include those cases in your evaluation. Do not assume every HTTPS application needs a feature migration today.

What to do

  • Identify the OpenSSL library actually linked or bundled into your service. The command-line executable may be a different copy.
  • Check your runtime or distribution vendor’s supported update path. A compatible security update on the current branch may be the appropriate choice.
  • For a 4.1 evaluation, test handshake loss and retries, listener error handling, providers and application compatibility in staging. Review the linked known issues before rollout.

Reference commands

Identify the command-line library build
openssl version -a

Verify the result

Keep the current working build and record the library version used by the running application. Decide on migration from required features, vendor support and test results rather than the release number alone.

Goal: apply the documented workflow to my development project.
Read the existing project instructions, inspect the relevant files and explain the smallest useful setup.

Use the article and its examples as references. Identify any missing project files before making changes.

If I have not supplied a project folder, ask which development project to use. Do not invent a repository URL.

Additional project setup instructions:
Evaluate whether my project needs OpenSSL 4.1.0 using https://github.com/openssl/openssl/releases/tag/openssl-4.1.0 and https://openssl-library.org/news/timeline/index.html . Treat October 23 as a feature-release date, not proof of a new emergency vulnerability. Inventory actual linked or bundled OpenSSL versions and vendor support, not only the openssl CLI. Check DTLS 1.3 and listener use against the release notes known issues. Keep compatible security updates on supported existing branches when a feature migration is unnecessary. Propose a staging test matrix for handshake loss/retry, provider compatibility and application HTTPS. Do not replace a system crypto library or deploy without approval.

Check the dated advisory and current official vendor guidance. Identify whether my installed version and configuration are affected before proposing a fix.

Give me a short plan, then make the agreed local changes and run the relevant checks. Report actual results and anything not verified. Stop before credentials, paid services, production changes, push, merge or deployment.
